At 36, Ridwan Is Battling a Rare Cancer… to See His Two Children Grow Up

What he thought was just a simple back pain turned out to be something far more serious.

For Mohammad Ridwan Baulum, 36, this pain was actually the first sign of a life-threatening illness.

Today, this father of two children, aged 9 and 4, is in a race against time. Doctors have diagnosed him with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and disrupts the production of essential cells needed to fight infections.

For months, Ridwan never imagined that his pain could hide such a disease.

Like many fathers caught up in daily responsibilities, he continued working. A stock controller by profession, he didn’t want to stop. He had responsibilities—his family, his children who depend on him.

So he pushed through.

At first, the solutions were simple: traditional remedies, followed by painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. Each time, the relief seemed to return… but only temporarily.

Every morning, the pain came back—stronger, more persistent.

Over time, it intensified and spread across his body. That’s when Ridwan realized he could no longer ignore the signals his body was giving him.

He went to Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, where doctors began a series of tests. Initial X-rays didn’t reveal anything alarming, but the pain continued. Further investigations were carried out.

An MRI was performed, followed by more detailed blood tests.

The results raised concern, and Ridwan was referred to a hematologist—a specialist in blood diseases.

A few days later, the diagnosis was confirmed:

Multiple myeloma.

A rare cancer that affects the bone marrow, causing intense bone pain, deep fatigue, and progressive weakening of the body.

For Ridwan and his family, this moment changed everything. Life was suddenly divided into two parts: before the diagnosis… and after.

Doctors explained that the most appropriate treatment for this type of cancer requires specialized care not available in Mauritius.

Faced with this reality, the family turned to the OMCA Group, known for supporting Mauritian patients in accessing treatment abroad.

After reviewing his medical file, it was recommended that Ridwan receive treatment at HCG Cancer Hospital in Mumbai, India.

The treatment plan includes a full evaluation, followed by high-dose chemotherapy cycles, and then an autologous bone marrow transplant—a procedure using the patient’s own cells to rebuild the bone marrow and improve chances of recovery.

For his wife, the emotion is overwhelming:

“Ridwan is a very devoted father. Our children are only nine and four years old. They still need their father so much.”

OMCA Foundation is now calling on the public to help give this young father a chance to continue his fight against the disease.

Ridwan is eligible for Zakaat.
