Bedridden for Years: At 65, Narriman Hopes to Walk Again

There was a time when Rossaye Beebee Narriman lived an active and independent life. Today, at 65, this mother spends most of her days lying in bed, trapped by constant pain running through her lower back and legs.

Since 2020, her health has gradually deteriorated.

It all began with lower back pain. At first, her family thought it was temporary—perhaps due to age or fatigue. But over time, the pain intensified. It spread to her legs, accompanied by tingling and numbness, making every movement increasingly difficult.

Slowly, walking became a struggle.

Narriman consulted several doctors and underwent multiple medical tests in Mauritius, including MRI scans and CT scans of the lumbar spine. The results revealed a much more serious condition than expected.

Doctors diagnosed degenerative lumbar disc disease, along with severe nerve compression at levels L4-L5 and L5-S1.

The examinations also showed chronic inflammation in the spine and narrowing of the spaces where nerves exit, causing compression of the nerve roots.

This compression explains the intense pain and numbness in her legs.

Despite supportive treatments, physiotherapy sessions, and pain medication, Narriman’s condition has continued to worsen over the years.

Today, the pain is so severe that she is almost completely bedridden.

She can only stand briefly to go to the bathroom. The rest of her time is spent eating, resting, and lying in bed. Standing for too long or taking even a few steps triggers intense pain.

For a woman who was once active and independent, this reality is extremely difficult.

For her family as well.

Her son, Abdallah, who lives with her, witnesses this struggle every day. Together with his wife and Narriman’s father, they take turns caring for her and meeting her needs.

“Seeing her suffer like this is very difficult for us,” he shares. “But we are doing everything we can to stay strong and give her all the support she needs.”

Despite years of pain, the family refuses to lose hope.

After reviewing her medical file, it has been recommended that Narriman be referred to a specialized center in India for a comprehensive spinal evaluation.

Doctors are considering lumbar decompression surgery along with spinal stabilization at L4-L5 and L5-S1, a procedure that could relieve pressure on the nerves and help her regain some mobility.

For her family, the hope is simple yet immense: to see this 65-year-old mother walk again… and live without pain.

In light of this situation, OMCA Foundation is appealing for solidarity to help Narriman access this life-changing treatment.

Narriman is eligible for Zakaat.
